During our first meeting with the entire group to discuss
ideas we all quickly agreed that we definitely didn’t want to do a serious,
depressing, gritty piece like most British drama’s.
Our views on it were this:-
“We are
British, we are good at being depressing and showing depressing realism, ok we
get it, let’s move on and try to do something fresh, fun and different”.
We also agreed that we didn’t want to do anything too big or
“out there” or psychological, due to the fact that we didn’t have the time,
money or experience to pull off such an ambitious idea and for it to look professional.
We liked the idea of a character confessing a secret or worrying
about the outcome of an event. After a few discussions of ideas on what this
may be, Ben came up with the idea of a teenage son coming out to his father.
We all agreed that this was perfect as it would be a serious
subject matter and a touching, heartfelt story, but also we had the chance to
bring a light-hearted quirkiness to the overall mood of the film.
Agreeing on that story we then discussed ideas of how the
son would tell his father and how the father would react. From discussing this
we came up with a great idea that drama could be about showing a number of
different scenarios on how the father would react, all from the fear and
imagination of the son.
So with this we all brainstormed a number of very funny and
very different scenarios that we could include in the drama. I made a note of
all the scenarios so when I came to writing the first draft of the script I could
include the best scenarios, but also taking into account what could be possible
to shoot within a tight schedule and the lack of money we had.
