Drama - Final Treatment

After brainstorming ideas together, we have decided to go for this idea:

No. One Dad is a stylised light-hearted drama about a young man coming out to his father. Jack is a young gay man contemplating coming out to his father.  He is extremely nervous and hesitant, but his boyfriend, George, is trying to reassure him.  Despite George's reassurance, Jack cannot help but imagine the worst case scenarios.

These include: his father dropping dead, his father wretching in disgust, his father not believing him, and his father smashing up the pub. The final cutaway is very serious (his father disowning him), Jack realises that he has to face up to it and tell his father.  He finally gets the courage to tell his father, who accepts him, albeit in a rather more boring manner than Jack had been expecting. The film is set primarily in two locations: a park where Jack talks with George; and a pub where the fantasies and final scene with the father are set.

The tone of this film will be mostly light-hearted (except for the final cutaway), presenting the rather dark subject matter (death/mental breakdowns) in a comedic manner. The music will suit this tone, featuring light syncopated and angular motifs. The music will also punctuate certain moments in the film to create comedy (similar to the short film Foolishly Seeking True Love where the fathers head tilts accompanied by an upbeat chord signifying his death in a comedic way).

The scenes in the park will make use of camera movement and pans. These scenes will also have a lot of wide shots and bird’s eye view shots. There will be generally fewer cuts in these scenes (some consisting of only one shot), and the shots will be rather long. The sound design will be rather muted, with little other than the dialogue and low atmos in the mix. This will emphasise the dialogue and create a more subtle tone. This style is inspired by Wes Anderson films such as The Royal Tenenbaums and The Darjeeling Limited.

The cutaways to the pub will be noticeably quicker paced. Any pans will be much quicker, the framing will be tighter and the editing in general will be faster.  The sound design will include heightened sound effects, including “whoosh” sound effects in the transitions.  This will be to amplify the already inherent exaggeration and silliness of the scenes. This style is inspired by Edgar Wright films such as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

The film will have a very homely look.  The white balance will lean towards the warm side and the shots will be saturated. The set and costume will feature yellows and oranges in the pub, and blues and greens in the park.

The intended audience for this film would be younger audiences, around 15-25. Fans of quirky comedies like the films previously mentioned would appreciate this style.  This film will most likely resonate with LGBT audiences due to the subject matter, however it is not exclusively aimed at this community.
